He is also recognised as being a <a title=\"Saint\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint\">saint<\/a> within the <a title=\"Catholic Church\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catholic_Church\">Catholic Church<\/a>. During his life he gained a reputation as a leading <a title=\"Renaissance humanism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Renaissance_humanism\">Renaissance humanist<\/a>, an opponent of the <a title=\"Protestant Reformation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protestant_Reformation\">Protestant Reformation<\/a> of <a title=\"Martin Luther\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Luther\">Martin Luther<\/a> and wrote long treatises opposing <a title=\"William Tyndale\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Tyndale\">William Tyndale<\/a> and others who wished to see the <a title=\"Bible\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bible\">Bible<\/a> translated into the <a title=\"English language\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/English_language\">English language<\/a>.\u00a0 For three years toward the end of his life he was <a title=\"Lord Chancellor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lord_Chancellor\">Lord Chancellor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More coined the word &#8220;<a title=\"Utopia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Utopia\">utopia<\/a>&#8221; &#8211; a name he gave to the ideal, imaginary island nation whose political system he described in <em><a title=\"Utopia (book)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Utopia_(book)\">Utopia<\/a><\/em>, published in 1516. An important counsellor to <a title=\"Henry VIII of England\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_VIII_of_England\">Henry VIII of England<\/a>, he was imprisoned and executed by <a title=\"Decapitation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Decapitation\">beheading<\/a> in 1535 after he had fallen out of favour with the king over his refusal to sign the <a title=\"Acts of Supremacy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acts_of_Supremacy\">Act of Supremacy 1534<\/a>, which declared the king to be the <a title=\"Supreme Head\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supreme_Head\">Supreme Head<\/a> of the <a title=\"Church of England\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Church_of_England\">Church of England<\/a>, effecting a final split with the <a title=\"Catholic Church\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catholic_Church\">Catholic Church<\/a> in <a title=\"Rome\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome\">Rome<\/a>. More was <a title=\"Beatification\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beatification\">beatified<\/a> by the Catholic Church in 1886 and canonised, with <a title=\"John Fisher\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Fisher\">John Fisher<\/a>, in 1935.
