{"id":179,"date":"2010-05-03T01:45:57","date_gmt":"2010-05-03T01:45:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buckroth.wordpress.com\/?p=179"},"modified":"2010-05-03T01:45:57","modified_gmt":"2010-05-03T01:45:57","slug":"a-raccoon-in-the-attic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mydiabeticsoul.com\/?p=179","title":{"rendered":"A Raccoon In The Attic"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>You know how the story goes&#8230;&#8221;it&#8217;s always somebody else&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 Well,\u00a0my husband and I are\u00a0that somebody.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Yep, we have one, a raccoon in the attic.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Now, I&#8217;ve heard lots of stories of one person or another having to deal with a raccoon and\/or its young living in a basement or attic.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve even seen animal\u00a0television shows featuring such critters and I was creepily\u00a0mesmerized as to how, what, when and where such instances could and do happen.\u00a0 However, I never thought that we would have one right here, in <strong><em>our<\/em><\/strong> attic, on\u00a0<strong><em>our <\/em><\/strong>neighborhood street in rustic, woodsy suburbia.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>You see,\u00a0my husband&#8217;s wood\u00a0shop is \u00a0an outbuilding on\u00a0our property.\u00a0 Having noticed a slight molding effect, a growth, last summer on the north ceiling of the shop, we kept our eyes on it, realizing that a new roof would be in order &#8220;one of these days.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t think too much of it,\u00a0but one of our eyes glanced at it occasionally.\u00a0 After all, it was such a small growth looking like\u00a0more of a water stain than anything else.\u00a0 No big deal.\u00a0 It was ignored. We went about our business as usual.\u00a0 However, our calculations ran a bit short.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Mold, caused by dampness, further weakens its host.\u00a0 Well, the day has arrived, this day, to-day!\u00a0\u00a0 Mold feasts on damp-to-wet sheet-rock\/dry wall.\u00a0 A lesson has been learned right there!<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>As my husband\u00a0was doing his usual puttsing\u00a0in this, his\u00a0beloved shop,\u00a0just this morning,\u00a0when, after\u00a0tweny\u00a0minutes\u00a0or so, what to his wandering eyes should appear, but a section of caved-in ceiling!\u00a0 Closer examination with a ladder and flashlight concluded that there is a hole in the roof, right through to the big glorious blue sky.\u00a0 Further examination revealed\u00a0poop droppings, bigger than a rat or mouse&#8217;s.\u00a0 AHA!\u00a0 there was a twinkling eyed raccoon nestled\u00a0in the insulation.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>After calling &#8216;Mo, Curly, and Larry&#8217; (sarcasm for two\u00a0area businesses that supposedly deal with such conundrums) about this\u00a0finding, one guy wanted $160.00 to come out\u00a0with other $85.00 to trap &#8211; but not remove &#8211; the critter.\u00a0 The other guy never called back.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>So hubby, in his infinite wisdom, rushed over to Harbor Freight Tools, purchased a specific type of &#8216;racoon trap,&#8217; put dog food and peanut butter in it because that is what his brother told him to use, and somehow rigged\u00a0the trap\u00a0to the roof.\u00a0\u00a0For some reason or another, there is a yellow nylon rope\u00a0 securely fastened from the north side of the\u00a0structure to the south, extending about 10 feet.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t ask.\u00a0 Neither did I\u00a0inspect this rigging apparatus but trust he knows what he&#8217;s doing.\u00a0 I certainly do not have the know-how and would end up paying big bucks for the critters disappearance!<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>So, I\u00a0needed to\u00a0share this with you.\u00a0\u00a0 Hubby has\u00a0been checking the trap every couple of hours.\u00a0 But I know what&#8217;s going to happen: after we settle in for the night, a loud crash, bang, boom will sound meaning that the raccoon is caught in the trap\u00a0and unhappy &#8211; unhappy is the key word.\u00a0 And the rest you can probably imagine for yourselves.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Ahh, such is life and living in the woodsy, nature filled\u00a0suburbs.\u00a0 It&#8217;s okay, though.\u00a0 I chaulk this up to another one of our wonderful adventures!\u00a0 I look forward to sharing the outcome in days to come!<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>A.
