{"id":200,"date":"2010-05-14T16:44:11","date_gmt":"2010-05-14T16:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buckroth.wordpress.com\/?p=200"},"modified":"2010-05-14T16:44:11","modified_gmt":"2010-05-14T16:44:11","slug":"a-larger-history-on-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mydiabeticsoul.com\/?p=200","title":{"rendered":"A LARGER History on\u00a0Diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Keeping up with knowledge and\u00a0highlighting what I know in many facets of my life, I occasionally peruse the local library.\u00a0 As the\u00a0neighborhood library\u00a0is\u00a0an exact mile from my house, walking there and back is an extra positive for my daily diabetes care regimen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While there,\u00a0I came across a childrens&#8217; book on Diabetes.\u00a0 No longer a child myself and having lived with diabetes for over fifty years, I was curious to see what writings, books, were available to the newly diagnosed diabetics, especially the children.\u00a0 Not much has changed, really.\u00a0 All of the avialable\u00a0childrens&#8217; books pertaining to diabetes are uplifting, encouraging.\u00a0 That was certainly not the case when I was a child in the 1960&#8217;s.\u00a0 Oh well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I found one particular book entitled plainly\u00a0&#8220;Diabetes,&#8221; by Gail B. Stewart, copyright 1999.\u00a0\u00a0 I learned something!\u00a0 Chapter 1 immediately details the history of diabetes as I have never known.\u00a0 I re-write this for you here:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>A History of Diabetes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">1500 B.C. &#8211; First description of diabets\u00a0in the Ebers Papyrus, an Egyptian compilation of medical works containing a number of remedies for passing too much urine.\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">400 B. C. &#8211; Susruta, a physician in India, records diabetes symptoms and classifies types of diabetes.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">A.D. 10 &#8211; Celsus, a Roman encyclopedist and author of a comprehensive medical text, develops a clinical description of diabetes.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">2nd century A. D &#8211; Aretaeus, a Greek physician, coins the term <em>diabetes<\/em>.\u00a0 (<em>Diabetes is the Greek word meaning &#8220;to siphen&#8221; or &#8220;to pass through.&#8221;\u00a0)<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">1869 &#8211; von Mering\u00a0and Minkowski\u00a0observe\u00a0that diabetes develops when an animal&#8217;s pancreas is removed.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">1921 &#8211; Banting\u00a0and Best obtain and purify islets of Langerhans from an animal pancreas, inject the material (insulin) into a diabetic animal, and find a fall in blood sugar level.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">I thought this important to share with all of you.\u00a0 It is just as simple as that!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">A.
