{"id":255,"date":"2010-06-15T20:53:34","date_gmt":"2010-06-15T20:53:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buckroth.wordpress.com\/?p=255"},"modified":"2010-06-15T20:53:34","modified_gmt":"2010-06-15T20:53:34","slug":"pump-up-the-jam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mydiabeticsoul.com\/?p=255","title":{"rendered":"Pump Up The Jam!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This particular blog will intimately and ultimately refer to <em>my<\/em> personal use of various and popularly known insulin pumps.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The phrase &#8220;Pump Up The Jam,&#8221; has become a personal clich\u00e9\u00a0that I have used for many years\u00a0dealing with diabetes.\u00a0 Before\u00a0insulin pumps came into flamboyant\u00a0popularity,\u00a0a particular\u00a0song entitled &#8220;Pump Up The Jam by Technotronic, 1989, \u00a0was adopted through a need for self-expression.\u00a0 <em>Technotronic<\/em>\u00a0helped me to achieve this.<\/p>\n<p>Pumping on to a present-day conundrum, I have quit the pump.\u00a0 You see, my original purchase\u00a0was glorified\u00a0and\u00a0its machinations remained faithful for eleven years.\u00a0 At one time, an endocrinologist begged me to try a competitor.\u00a0 I did.\u00a0 He earned a trip to Hawaii and that particular pump ceased its service(s) and sent me to the hospital with ketosis.\u00a0 Not good. Another story.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With that drama aside, I was able to return to my original and beloved insulin pump and its organization. \u00a0Thinking that I was comfortably back to my original brand after insurance tedium,\u00a0\u00a0this company sold out to another well-known diabetes tool supplier.\u00a0\u00a0The next\u00a0three years\u00a0brought off-and-on havoc.\u00a0 For instance, necessary insets\u00a0and tubings\u00a0were changed, battery types were changed, my blood sugars became a daily roller-coaster, my HbA1C levels rose, my give-a-care waned, and this particular company blamed me for &#8220;having too much scar tissue&#8221; and that is why the pump did not work.\u00a0 <em>Well, after over fifty years of needling and pricking myself in one way or another, of course I have too much scar tissue!<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Onto my THIRD insulin pump manufacturer, this relationship lasted four weeks, <strong>tops<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Weeks\u00a0passed as I volleyed between plastic and stainless steel cannulae (aka: infusion sets), constantly and consistently rotating my body target sites.\u00a0 The pump&#8217;s &#8220;error&#8221; messages and vibrations were unending, ceaseless day and night,\u00a0and became embarrassing.\u00a0 The\u00a0required AA batteries lasted less than ten days, the clip to hold\u00a0the pump\u00a0on my waistband broke, and that was it!\u00a0 The last straw!\u00a0 I decided to care for myself and my disease with insulin injections.<\/p>\n<p>Chaos brings change and change brings chaos.<\/p>\n<p>Presently, I am in my fifth week of\u00a0&#8216;shooting up the jam&#8217; as opposed to &#8216;pumping up the jam&#8217;\u00a0with multiple (six)\u00a0injections per day.\u00a0 This many injections per day is due to the fact that I use Apidra\u00a0and Levemir\u00a0insulins that cannot be mixed together.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Acceptance breeds tolerance.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At this writing, I have not notified my endocrinologist, nor my internist, nor my general medical practitioner.\u00a0 I know what to do, how to do it,\u00a0 where to do it and why to do it.\u00a0 After all, I have been diabetic longer than they have been alive <strong>and<\/strong> longer than they have been medical practitioners!\u00a0 They will all find out soon enough &#8211; when I need refills.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<em>Do widzenia.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A.
