<strong><em>Jury Duty<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Through our beloved USPS ( United States Postal Service), I have been &#8220;<em>hereby summoned to serve as a trial juror for the Superior Court<\/em>&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 At first impressed that\u00a0a <strong>Superior Court<\/strong> would want <em>me<\/em> for <em>any<\/em>\u00a0reason conjures up positive emotions.\u00a0\u00a0 After the 30 seconds it takes me to get over myself, I think rationally.\u00a0 After all, I have done this numerous times in the past.\u00a0 So being, the anxiety never lessens.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hmm.\u00a0 My responsibilities will need to be put on hold.\u00a0 That means\u00a0a dog-sitter and walker, getting a lead on laundering (and not just personal clothes), pre-paying monthly bills, making unpaid-for-work arrangements, fill the gas tank,\u00a0collect loose change\u00a0for vending machines and lunch money, change my voice mail with directions, set my e-mails to &#8216;vacation response&#8217; without a vacation, cancel appointments, meal plan, get my exercise workouts in <em>now, <\/em>pack reading materials and medications, and so many more errands that were once enjoyable and done at my\u00a0leisurely pace!<\/p>\n<p>I have been told\u00a0to &#8220;throw it [the summons] away,&#8221; and claim that it was never received.\u00a0 I have also been told by others who have themselves been told (hearsay) that if you do not respond, &#8220;they&#8221; will find you.\u00a0 Who\u00a0are &#8220;they?&#8217;\u00a0 And once &#8220;they&#8221;\u00a0find me, what are they going to do with me?<\/p>\n<p>In bold, red print on the summons it reads: &#8220;<em>Failure to appear when instructed is punishable by contempt and\/or fine, pursuant to <\/em>[whatever states&#8217;] <em>code of procedure section 209<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Phew!\u00a0 That&#8217;s a lot of guilt for a temporaty\u00a0volunteer position!\u00a0\u00a0 Being found &#8220;in contempt&#8221; means jail time &#8211; I do not want that.\u00a0\u00a0Being &#8220;fined&#8221; is no better because I do not want to pay for someone else&#8217;s legal wrong-doing.\u00a0 Throw them in the slammer and be done with it!\u00a0 No no, can&#8217;t take that attitude.<\/p>\n<p>So, by the &#8216;systems&#8217; useful force of guilt-by-duress, I concede.\u00a0 Following the printed instructions by making a necessary telephone call for reporting instructions, my jury <em>duty-ship-ness<\/em>\u00a0is postponed for two days with a message to &#8220;contact this office after five o&#8217;clock in the evening.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Such a bother!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Well, my house is now the cleanest it has been since before Thanksgiving.\u00a0 My bills\u00a0uptaded.\u00a0 The taxes\u00a0are filed.\u00a0 Errands are accomplished\u00a0to include extra dog food and treats.\u00a0 Everyone has been notified whether they need notification or not.<\/p>\n<p>I am going forward.\u00a0 Although being forwarned that I will be placed on &#8220;Standby Service,&#8221; a chosen\u00a0book will keep me busy as I wait <em>to be chosen <\/em>&#8211; or not &#8211;\u00a0while sitting on a hard plastic\u00a0chair for six to eight hours.\u00a0 Sure, I could choose to &#8216;disqualify&#8217; myself, but there is no recourse for that.\u00a0 I will go forward and promote\u00a0my country&#8217;s legal system with\u00a0my brain and my time.\u00a0\u00a0 If this is the best I can do to serve my country and its citizens, then so be it.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll catch up on some reading.<\/p>\n<p>Stay positive and expect the unexpected!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AK.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here is a situation that we all come across sooner or later among these beautiful United States &#8211;
