Did you ever wonder how mothers of children with diabetes are chosen? Somehow I visualize God hovering over earth selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As he observes, he instructs his angels to make notes in a giant ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArmstrong, Beth, son. Patron Saint Matthew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForrest, Marjorie, daughter. Patron Saint Cecilia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRutledge, Carrie, twins. Patron Saint Gerard.\u00a0 He\u2019s used to profanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally, He passes a name to an angel and smiles, \u201cGive her a child with diabetes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The angel is curious. \u201cWhy this one, God?\u00a0 She\u2019s so happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly,&#8221; smiles God.\u00a0 \u201cCould I give a child with diabetes to a mother who does not know laughter?\u00a0 That would be cruel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut has she the patience?\u201d asks the angel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want her to have too much patience, or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair.\u00a0 Once the shock and resentment wear off, she\u2019ll handle it.\u00a0 I watched her today.\u00a0 She has that feeling of self and independence that is so rare and so necessary in a mother.\u00a0 You see, the child I am going to give her has her own world. She has to make it live in her world and that\u2019s not going to be easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Lord, I don\u2019t think she even believes in you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>God smiles.\u00a0 \u201cNo matter.\u00a0 I can fix that.\u00a0 This one is perfect.\u00a0 She has just enough selfishness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The angel gasps.\u00a0 \u201cSelfishness?\u00a0 Is that a virtue?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>God nods.\u00a0 \u201cIf she cannot separate herself from the child occasionally, she will never survive.\u00a0 Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with less than perfect.\u00a0 She does not realize it yet, but she is to be envied.\u00a0 I will permit her to see clearly the things I see\u2026ignorance, cruelty, prejudice\u2026and allow her to rise above them.\u00a0 She will never be alone.\u00a0 I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing my work as surely as if she is here by my side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what about her patron saint?\u201d asks the angel, his pen poised in mid-air.<\/p>\n<p>God smiles. \u201cA mirror will suffice.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HOW GOD SELECTS THE MOTHER OF A CHILD WITH DIABETES\u00a0\u00a0by Erma Bombeck &#8220;Some\u00a0women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures and a couple by habit.
