{"id":881,"date":"2013-01-03T12:49:59","date_gmt":"2013-01-03T20:49:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mydiabeticsoul.com\/?p=881"},"modified":"2013-01-03T12:49:59","modified_gmt":"2013-01-03T20:49:59","slug":"symbols-symbols-everywhere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mydiabeticsoul.com\/?p=881","title":{"rendered":"Symbols, Symbols Everywhere!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Simply, visual symbols are a\u00a0representation of\u00a0 something.\u00a0 Whether you realize it or not, humans young and old are bombarded by symbols day in and day out.\u00a0 For instance, drivers are encumbered with\u00a0symbols\u00a0as you can imagine.\u00a0 I won&#8217;t even begin to list them here!\u00a0 However, my favorites are the bright yellow square placcards that are tightly screwed\u00a0to poles on the side of a road displaying\u00a0a picture of a dancing deer or the ones with people holding hands.\u00a0 Although I&#8217;ve never seen a dancing deer in the road, I know what it means = watch out for deer on the road.\u00a0 And the people holding hands is easily discernible as well.<\/p>\n<p>Symbols in pictures can tell a brief &#8211; even personal &#8211; story.\u00a0 For example, each division of\u00a0our United States Military\u00a0has a colorful symbol.\u00a0 As soon as most of us see it, we know what it represents.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=united+states+military+symbols&amp;hl=en&amp;tbo=u&amp;tbm=isch&amp;source=univ&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=VOnlUOGtEev4igKl74DIDw&amp;ved=0CEcQsAQ&amp;biw=1024&amp;bih=626\">https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=united+states+military+symbols&amp;hl=en&amp;tbo=u&amp;tbm=isch&amp;source=univ&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=VOnlUOGtEev4igKl74DIDw&amp;ved=0CEcQsAQ&amp;biw=1024&amp;bih=626<\/a>.\u00a0 Any one or a number of these brings about an emotion, a memory, a thought.<\/p>\n<p>Logos (logoes?) and icons are synonymous with symbols.\u00a0 Test yourself!<\/p>\n<p>The medical community of the world is also explosive with symbols: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Medical_symbols\">http:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Medical_symbols<\/a>.\u00a0 My favorite is that of the Blue Heel Society: <a href=\"http:\/\/blueheelsociety.blogspot.com\/p\/photos.html\">http:\/\/blueheelsociety.blogspot.com\/p\/photos.html<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Admirable as our human efforts are, it takes each and every one of us not a half a second to realize the meaning of\u00a0a visual symbol.\u00a0 Non-visual symbols are distinct as well.\u00a0 Take body language.\u00a0 A finger in the ear or nose\u00a0tells me something = stay away from that person!\u00a0 A hand to the heart or throat, etc., is expressive.\u00a0 Think about it.<\/p>\n<p>Can you think of any symbol that is\u00a0unusual or unfamiliar or least used?\u00a0 If so, please share.<\/p>\n<p>Just sayin&#8217;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>A.
