{"id":887,"date":"2014-02-24T16:51:31","date_gmt":"2014-02-25T00:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mydiabeticsoul.com\/?p=887"},"modified":"2015-02-07T10:27:48","modified_gmt":"2015-02-07T18:27:48","slug":"synonyms-and-homonyms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mydiabeticsoul.com\/?p=887","title":{"rendered":"Synonyms and Homonyms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a published author and\u00a0writer, the use of <strong>synonyms<\/strong> and <strong>homonyms<\/strong> has been most beneficial to my writing tasks.\u00a0 They are also fun to use, fun to learn.\u00a0 However, I have seen and heard the confusion concerning synonyms and homonyms. Many people, especially elemental youngsters, do not know the difference between the two and therefore do not know how to use one or the other.\u00a0 Well, practice makes perfect and I would like to help&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The American Heritage Dictionary defines a <strong>synonym<\/strong> as &#8221; <em>a word that has a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">meaning<\/span> identical or very similar to that of another word in the same language<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Furthermore, a <strong>homonym<\/strong> is defined as &#8220;<em>one of two or more words that have the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">same sound<\/span> and often the same spelling but differ in meaning<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Repeat after me:\u00a0 &#8220;Homonym same, Synonym mean.\u00a0 Homonym same, Synonym mean.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Why use them?\u00a0 The use of such words in your writing and\/or speaking\u00a0will keep you, your readers, and listeners\u00a0far from boredom. Instead of using the same descriptive words, verbs, pronouns.\u00a0or words of any sort in your text and\/or essays and\/or speeches, synonyms and homonyms will enhance your knowledge and increase the\u00a0knowledge of expression between\u00a0 yourself and others.<\/p>\n<p>Both types of words are actually fun to use. At least it is fun to me. But as I told you already, I am a writer and I&#8217;m always looking to express my typed word in a different manner.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude00\u00a0 I try to keep my readers focussed with the attention on my message(s).\u00a0 Is it working?!<\/p>\n<p>As a hint,\u00a0 the best way I always remember homonyms is with the word &#8220;same&#8221; &#8212; <em>homonyms sound the same &#8211;<\/em> as expressed in the above mantra.\u00a0\u00a0 For instance, bear and bare,\u00a0 shoe and shoo,\u00a0 meat and meet,\u00a0 eye and I, new and knew, see and sea, slow and slough, night and knight,\u00a0\u00a0etc.\u00a0 The use of these words greatly depends upon the context of your sentence or sentences.<\/p>\n<p>Click here:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abcteach.com\/free\/l\/list_homonyms.pdf\">http:\/\/www.abcteach.com\/free\/l\/list_homonyms.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are\u00a0more examples of <strong>honomyms<\/strong> taken from a Google search for your better understanding:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Angle<\/strong>: figure formed by two lines projecting from the same point; ALSO, to fish with a hook.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Groom<\/strong>: the guy marrying the bride; ALSO, taking care of one&#8217;s appearance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clip<\/strong>: to cut\/shear; ALSO, to fasten together (a la paper clip).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Down<\/strong>: the direction opposite of &#8220;up;&#8221; ALSO, the feathers of a goose.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">*****************************************************************<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/synonyms-antonyms.com\/synonyms-list.html\">http:\/\/synonyms-antonyms.com\/synonyms-list.html<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; Words that <strong>MEAN<\/strong> the same&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples of <strong>synonyms<\/strong> taken from a Google search\u00a0\u00a0for your better understanding once again: piece = part, item; plot = drive, guide, maneuver; theme = base, root, stem; etc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.answers.com\/Q\/What_are_100_examples_of_synonyms#slide=10&amp;article=What_are_100_examples_of_synonyms\">http:\/\/wiki.answers.com\/Q\/What_are_100_examples_of_synonyms#slide=10&amp;article=What_are_100_examples_of_synonyms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I hope this bit (crumb, morsel, iota) is useful.\u00a0 With\u00a0creativity, you\u00a0can\u00a0express yourself in words by\u00a0changing nouns into verbs and vice versa using synonyms.\u00a0 Try it!\u00a0 A Thesaurua is a useful tool(implement, pawn, utensil)!<\/p>\n<p>Just sayin&#8217;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>A.
