{"id":987,"date":"2013-08-23T22:05:54","date_gmt":"2013-08-24T05:05:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mydiabeticsoul.com\/?p=987"},"modified":"2015-02-07T10:29:46","modified_gmt":"2015-02-07T18:29:46","slug":"a-50-year-medal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mydiabeticsoul.com\/?p=987","title":{"rendered":"A 50 Year Medal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"stcpDiv\">\n<p>I am happy to share with you that I have been \u201cawarded a 50-year Bronze Medal and Certificate to recognize the remarkable achievement of a successful life with insulin-dependent diabetes for half a century or more\u201d from the Joslin\u00a0Diabetes Center in Boston, Massachusetts.\u00a0 How many people do you know that have done that?\u00a0 I hope to be an inspiration to every diabetic as well as every person that has to deal with a life-threatening, terminal, disease.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone knows someone with diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>But everyone does NOT know about the Joslin Diabetes Center. \u00a0 This fact continues to amaze me since the organization was founded in 1952.\u00a0 The only one of its kind at the time, other organizations have repeatedly bloomed with the same underlying goal \u2013 raise money toward research for a cure of diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>With that being said (written), here \u201care some facts about Joslin Diabetes Center\u2019s Medal Program.\u00a0 The awards are presented on an ongoing basis to people with diabetes who have been insulin-dependent continuously<em> for at least<\/em> 25 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c* To date there have been approximately 2,663 50-Year Medals awarded by Joslin Diabetes Center since the program started in 1970.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c* Since the program began, in addition to the above, over 648 certificates have been awarded to people who have been insulin-dependent for 25 to 49 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c* Joslin Diabetes Center has awarded <strong>50-Yeart medals<\/strong> medals to recipients throughout the world, including individuals from Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, Hungary, Japan, Netherlands, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, South America, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.\u201d\u00a0 I like to include myself here, as a representative of the United States \u2014 California distinctly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c* [The Joslin Diabetes Center] has awarded 26 distinctive <strong>75-Year medals<\/strong>.\u00a0 Recipients of this special honor include the following people in the United States: a man from Massachusetts in <strong>1996<\/strong>; a man from Rhode Island\u00a0 in <strong>1999<\/strong>; a Florida woman in<strong> 2001<\/strong>; a Connecticut woman and a Washington state man \u2014 both in <strong>2002<\/strong>; a Pennsylvania woman, a Georgia man, a Wisconsin woman, a Virginian man, Indiana woman and New York man in <strong>2003<\/strong>; a New Zealand woman also in <strong>2003<\/strong>; men from Ohio, Massachusetts, New York,and Pennsylvania in <strong>2004<\/strong>; and a woman from Maryland in <strong>2005<\/strong>; men from Massachusetts, New York and a woman from Washington state in <strong>2006<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You see, there is hope for a long, successful and progressive life with this disease.\u00a0 But work has to be done.\u00a0 A commitment to ones\u2019 self has to be made.\u00a0 The inspiration is you!<\/p>\n<p>For more information about the medal\/certificate program, contact:<\/p>\n<p>Joslin Diabetes Center, Medalist Study, One Joslin Place, Boston, MA, 02215<\/p>\n<p>Phone: (617) 713-3481;
