Dad says.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not quite sure what &#8220;spend wisely&#8221; means, but I think I do okay with what I have.\u00a0 For instance, one of my friends from school, Wayne, asked me to go to the hobby store one Saturday afternoon.\u00a0 Because it is school summer vacation time, we could go almost any time, depending on our parents.\u00a0 However, Saturday&#8217;s are best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Wayne and I go way back, to kindergarten.\u00a0 He is the only red-head kid in our whole grammar school, never mind our fourth grade.\u00a0 He&#8217;s a full blown carrot top with thick hair in wavy curls.\u00a0 This makes him real easy to spot in a crowd.\u00a0 The girls in our class like Wayne more than the boys do.\u00a0 I think this is because he has good manners and is polite.\u00a0 It is either that or his clear sky blue eyes that sparkle.\u00a0 Even his eyelashes are orange, matching his hair.\u00a0 Most girls I know like blue eyes.\u00a0 I never thought about it much.\u00a0 My eyes are dark brown to match my light brown and blonde streaky hair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Wayne is a pale looking kid.\u00a0 Most of the time, the only color on Wayne&#8217;s face is because of his tannish-brown colored freckles.\u00a0 I swear, if he didn&#8217;t have freckles, he would be white as a ghost!\u00a0 I tease him about that, pretending that I can&#8217;t see him sometimes.\u00a0 We laugh.\u00a0 He blushes all red and pink.\u00a0 It&#8217;s funny to see.\u00a0 Wayne is shorter than I am &#8212;\u00a0for now.\u00a0 He teases me about my long brown hair &#8212; so flat, so straight and thin.\u00a0 &#8220;There&#8217;s nothing to your hair,&#8221; he tells me as he quickly flicks it in the air.\u00a0 &#8220;You don&#8217;t even have to brush it.\u00a0 Your hair just hangs there off your fat head,&#8221; he often tells me as if I need to be reminded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">I think Wayne is jealous of my straight hair.\u00a0 Brushing his hair is a struggle because it is very thick.\u00a0 Mine is a lot easier because it is stick straight.\u00a0 He hates when his mother brushes his hair because &#8220;she always pulls it out of my head,&#8221; he told me one time.\u00a0 &#8220;And you have a chubby little pug-nose.\u00a0 Not like my pointy one at all,&#8221; he compares.\u00a0 &#8220;But you get a tan in the summer.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t tan, I burn.\u00a0 It&#8217;s awful,&#8221; he explains.\u00a0 That is true.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">One summer that I remember, his mother covered his face and arms with white suntan lotion so\u00a0 he wouldn&#8217;t get burned while playing with me in my back yard.\u00a0 He looked so funny.\u00a0 That stuff made him smell like the beach.\u00a0 I laughed at him.\u00a0 He didn&#8217;t like that.\u00a0 And after a while, the suntan lotion disappeared.\u00a0 But we stayed friends.\u00a0 He wears that stuff all the time.\u00a0 Sure, I use it too, but when I forget to rub it on my skin, I don&#8217;t get too worried.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;I guess you look like your father,&#8221; I told him because I think he does.\u00a0 &#8220;I look like my mother,&#8221; I said.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s okay with me because my mother is beautiful.\u00a0 My Dad&#8217;s okay looking &#8212; for a Dad.\u00a0 Sometimes he has a moustache.\u00a0 Mom told him to shave it off because it made her sneeze when they kiss.\u00a0 Eeeuu!\u00a0 Sneezing and kissing, yuck!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;Kali,&#8221; my mom called up the stairs.\u00a0 &#8220;Wayne is on the phone for you.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;Okay.\u00a0 Thanks.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll get it up here,&#8221; I told her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;Hi Wayne.\u00a0 Wassup?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;Hey.\u00a0 Can you come to the train store with me today or what?\u00a0 I&#8217;m looking for a certain model train engine and I think the <em>Viking Hobby Store<\/em> will have it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Well, I have no particular interest in model trains, so I knew I wouldn&#8217;t buy anything but I would go along with him anyway.\u00a0 This is a wise decision.\u00a0 After all, he is my very best friend.\u00a0 Very best friends do things for each other whether we need to or like to or not.\u00a0 It was Saturday morning anyway.\u00a0 Cleaning my room could wait until I got back.\u00a0 I was thinking, planning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;Mom, Dad, is it okay with you if I go to the hoppy store with Wayne today?\u00a0 He thinks he found the perfect train engine for his set.\u00a0 He wants me to go and help him check it out.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t mind.\u00a0 Is your room picked up?&#8221; Mom asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;Not all the way yet, Mom,&#8221; I replied.\u00a0 &#8220;I can finish when I get back.\u00a0 All I have to do is fold my clothes and put them away.\u00a0 A load of my socks and some t-shirts are still in the dryer.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;Well, all right.\u00a0 Did you ask your father?&#8221; Mom wanted to know.\u00a0 &#8220;And don&#8217;t forget to take a snack and some juice boxes with you.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;I know.\u00a0 I already have a pack of peanut butter nabs in my sack with some water.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know where Dad is.\u00a0 I thought he was in the kitchen with you.\u00a0 Maybe he&#8217;s in the garage.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;Okay,&#8221;\u00a0continued my mother.\u00a0 &#8220;If you don&#8217;t see your father on your way out, I&#8217;ll tell him.\u00a0 If you do, please remind him that we&#8217;re going shopping today.\u00a0 Oh, are you and Wayne taking your bikes or walking?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;I think we&#8217;ll walk.&#8221;\u00a0 And out the back door I went.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Chapter 2<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Wayne lives four houses away from me.\u00a0 I took the short-cut over to his house through a wildflower field.\u00a0 I often come here to pick my mother some flowers.\u00a0 I like to pick flowers for her.\u00a0 There are all kinds of wildflowers in this field: yellow ones, pink ones, purple ones with yellow centers.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know the names of these flowers, I just know they are pretty and Mom likes them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">After\u00a0I met Wayne on the front porch of his house, we proceeded to walk to this particular &#8216;train store&#8217; as he calls it.\u00a0 It is really a hobby store that has lots of other things of interest besides trains.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been in there with one of my older cousins.\u00a0 She was looking for some particular, special types of paint brushes made with camel&#8217;s hair.\u00a0 I thought that was cool &#8212; paint brushes made out of a camel&#8217;s hair!\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">There are small glider planes in this store with hand-held motor devices; there are different kinds of wood burners and wood carving tools; there are even lots of different colored rubber fish bait things &#8212; <em>lures<\/em>.\u00a0 I liked those because they are shiny, squishy, and they squiggle.\u00a0 Things that would attract a fish &#8212; go figure!\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Wayne had been\u00a0going on about a certain model train engine he saw in here a while ago.\u00a0 It took him weeks and weeks to save up his allowance money to buy it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;Hey, before we walk too far, is your insulin pump filled up?&#8221; Wayne asked.\u00a0 &#8220;I hope it doesn&#8217;t beep like crazy while we are out.\u00a0 I would hate to have to leave early so you could fix it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">&#8220;Yes, it&#8217;s fine.\u00a0\u00a0I filled it up with insulin yesterday morning and changed the needle site.\u00a0 We are good to go!&#8221;\u00a0 I planned this on purpose.\u00a0 I knew he would ask.\u00a0 I am diabetic.\u00a0 Wayne knows.\u00a0 Among many other things, I do take care of myself and my diabetes.\u00a0 I have to test my blood sugar levels many times each day.\u00a0 Diabetes is a disease that causes me not to digest food properly.\u00a0 Because of that, I wear\u00a0an insulin pump.\u00a0 I used to have to take insulin shots before I got the pump.\u00a0 Having the pump is much easier.\u00a0 An insulin pump squirts insulin into my body, automatically, a tiny bit at a time.\u00a0 A &#8220;squirt&#8221; is maybe the size of a pencil tip or the size of a period at the end of a sentence.\u00a0 My parents had to give me insulin shots before I learned to give them myself.\u00a0 I still keep syringes handy, in case the pump breaks down for whatever reason.\u00a0 This is called having &#8220;Plan B&#8221;
